Meet Our New Coach: Nick Oyarzun

CJ Cristobal ‘16 | Communications Specialist
Coach Oyarzun, born and raised in Miami, FL, is excited to come back home and continue forming young men into leaders on and off the field. With years of coaching experience, he is ready to make the Belen community proud!

Coach Oyarzun has been surrounded by football his whole life but only started playing once he got to high school. He credits much of his football knowledge to his coaches and those who helped him grow as a player and a young man. He says, “I had a great experience playing football and being part of a team. I had a lot of great coaches who positively impacted my life and I view them as mentors and communicate with them often.” This foundation of football IQ was only amplified by his time coaching at the collegiate level. With coaching experiences at FIU, Florida Memorial University, and most recently, Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee, he is ready to push these Wolverines to the next level.

When the opportunity to coach at Belen came onto his radar, he jumped at it. “The opportunity to impact a large number of young men at an elite academic institution that is rich in tradition excites me greatly. I can’t wait to get started!”

Coach Oyarzun wants our Wolverines to play with a great attitude, tremendous effort, and incredible confidence, but he knows that it is only right that he matches those energy levels to lead these young men to success. He aims to motivate the student-athletes to get the best out of all players on the field. This comes from a powerful moment he shared with his high school coach where he was challenged to find his own, why. He says, “I had a very impactful conversation with one of my coaches about what truly motivates me, and I want to get our players to look inside themselves and find out what motivates them. It may be a person, or it may be a goal, but if we just keep our why in front of us, we can accomplish things we never thought possible.”

He is grateful for the welcome reception he and his wife and young daughter have received from our community. “I am so excited to be here as the Head Football Coach at Belen Jesuit. The young men in our program have been working very hard and our success is your success. I am looking forward to seeing Wolverine Nation at our Spring Jamboree on Wednesday, May 22nd, at Southridge High School, along with all of our games in the 2024 season.”

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
