Belen Alumni tour scheduled

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
Belen Alumni get ready! That’s the message that Jesuit Father Guillermo “Willie” M. García-Tuñón '87 wants you to hear. This academic year, Father Willie will be joined by Alumni Association Executive Director Mariano Loret de Mola ’58, and Belen Jesuit Executive Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations Phil Fernandez ’94 on an “Alumni Tour” to select cities.
The goal, to connect with alumni (active or inactive) from around the country and reengage them by informing them about all the wonderful things happening on campus.

In the early years of the Belen Alumni Association in Miami, Jesuit Father Juan M. Dorta-Duque, a graduate of the class of 1940, began making visits to alumni throughout the world almost immediately after his arrival. He visited alumni and coordinated reunions in Jacksonville, Washington D.C., New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Denver, Tucson, St. Louis, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Boston, and Puerto Rico. He also traveled throughout the years as far away as Europe and Latin America in search of establishing vital links with Belen alumni. Fr. Dorta-Duque also held spiritual retreats based on St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises, Masses, Weddings, Baptisms, and Conferences about religious topics for alumni not only in Miami, but also wherever else he traveled to visit them.

In similar way, Father Willie is following in Father Dorta’s footsteps. “Since taking office in January I started to develop a plan for the continued advancement of our school,” said Fr. Willie. “As part of the process I will reconnect with my alumni brothers that are living outside of the Miami area. I know that one of Belen’s greatest assets is the Alumni Association. In an effort to stay connected with all our alumni, I will begin an alumni tour that will bring us to various cities around the country.”

The “Alumni Tour” has four stops scheduled this academic year with the hopes of adding more the following year. Alumni in the following cities or nearby cities are encouraged to save the date and RSVP as soon as possible by emailing mdemola@belenjesuit.org:
  • September 16-18.2016 New York
  • January 26-28, 2017 Gainesville
  • February 9-12, 2017 Atlanta.
  • March 2-5, 2017 DC.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
