Countdown to Tombola

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
The 51st Annual Fr. Dorta- Duque, SJ Memorial Tombola will take place February 8-10. The biggest event of the year begins on the first weekend of February with rides arriving on campus. To accommodate Tombola setup, parking and drop-off/ pickup is affected. It is important to remember the following:
  • The school entrances, gates #3 and #4 will be closed to ALL vehicles beginning Monday, February 4 for the Tombola set up.
  • Parents will drop off and pick up their children entering through gate #2.
  • Student drivers can enter and exit through gate #5.
  • The entrance to the school on SW 6th Street will remain open.
  • Access to gates #3 and #4 will reopen on Tuesday, February 12.

“We are looking forward a great Tombola weekend,” said Gigi Garcia-Chang, Tombola Coordinator. “There are a lot of moving parts and many ‘behind the scenes’ people working very hard to ensure that our students and their families have a great time. I strongly urge people to take advantage of pre-sale prices and purchase event tickets to the Culinary Extravaganza, Early Bird Shopping Event, Wine Tasting and Whiskey Tasting. Parents should also remember to purchase the unlimited ride bracelet. The best part of Tombola is seeing how the community comes together. I look foward to seeing parents, faculty, staff, students and alumni all interacting and having a great time.”

Belen Jesuit students who pre-purchased ride bracelets can pick them up after school on Friday, February 8 until 2 p.m. in the gym lobby. During Tombola, the ride bracelets can be picked up in the gym lobby. Please note, ride bracelets will not be sold during Tombola. YOU MUST HAVE A PRINT OUT OF THE EMAIL CONFIRMATION AND YOUR PHOTO ID TO PICK UP THE RIDE BRACELET. THE STUDENT MUST BE PRESENT TO ISSUE THE RIDE BRACELET.

Aside from the special events, there will also be performances by the Music Appreciation Society, the school bands and the Esto Vir Band. Additionally, we have two special concerts! Mad World Orchestra, formerly Eruption, will be in concert Saturday, Feb. 9 at 9 p.m. They used to play at the school dances in the late '80s. On Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m., Norberto y Marsela will be performing. This group is a longtime favorite who play at our annual Grandparents Day. All performances will take place in the Garrdio Family Plaza.

The culmination of Tombola weekend will begin with La Hora Loca and end with the drawing of the raffle winners on Sunday night. As a reminder, you’ve already paid for these raffle tickets as part of the cost of student registration. Your family has the option of selling the tickets in order to recuperate the funds or you can donate the additional proceeds to the school. We ask that you return the completed raffle ticket stubs by February 8 so that you can participate in the raffle and be eligible for the prizes. Raffle ticket stubs can also be turned in at any of the information booths during Tombola.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
