Belen Summer Camp is Back

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
After an unprecedented year, Belen Summer Camp will once again open to serve families in the community. The camp will run from June 21 to July 30 for girls and boys ages 5 to 14.

“Last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and for the first time in nearly 40 years, we couldn’t operate the summer camp,” said Carlos Barquin, Camp Director. “This summer, we are excited to say, we’re back! Every precaution will be taken to help ensure the safety of everyone, including having a smaller summer camp than usual.”

Normally considered the largest day camp in Miami-Dade County with over 1,000 campers, this year the capacity will be 500 with groups kept to under 25 children. “Additionally, we decided not to include 4-year-old campers to minimize the risk,” said Barquin. Other changes as a result of the heightened safety protocols include occasional half-day field trips to outdoor venues only and assigning each group its own classroom with desks properly spaced apart. Face masks will be required to be worn and campers will need to bring their own refillable water bottles.

Registration for the 2021 Belen Summer Camp begins on March 13. The registration fee will be $100.00. The cost for six weeks of camp is $1,150 if paid by May 7th and $1,300 if paid after that date. The camp fee includes two t-shirts, a camp bag, two masks, all regular activities, lunch, and snacks. Additional details and registration are available online, belensummercamp.org

A virtual orientation meeting for parents of registered campers is set for Saturday, June 12th at 10:00 a.m. Send any questions via email to info@belensummercamp.org. Applications are currently being accepted for various positions at Belen Summer Camp. You must be at least 16 years old to apply. Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
