Matteo Ricci China Club
Inspired by 16th
century Italian Jesuit, Matteo Ricci, the Club’s mission is to better understand Chinese culture and customs, while actively supporting the missionary work of the Hispanic/Italian Catholic Community of Beijing. The club moderator is Mr. Charles Cleveland
Matteo Ricci S.J. was a pioneer in bringing Christianity to China and one of the most famous missionaries of all times. He laid the foundation for the development of the first Catholic Church in China (also known as Nantang or the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception) and was celebrated for explaining Chinese culture to the Western World. The Hispanic/Italian Catholic Community of Beijing (Comunidad Católica Hispana/Italiana de Beijing) operates from Nantang and provides underprivileged Chinese with basics such as clothing, food, and temporary shelter while introducing them to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The Matteo Ricci China Club aims at helping Belen students learn the basics of Chinese culture (through activities like cultural and lingual presentations, playing mahjong and jianzi, food tasting, listening to music from the mainland, etc.), while raising money and supporting the missionary work carried in China by the Hispanic/Italian Catholic Community of Beijing, in particular by Fr. Carlo d’Imporzano in the South Cathedral (Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary). I plan to approach the following local institutions, among others, to assist the Club with the cultural exchange goal: Florida-China Chamber of Commerce and the China-Miami Trade Center.
The Club would greatly benefit the poor in China, while enabling Belen students of Chinese descent to better familiarize themselves with their roots and regular Belen students to better prepare to interact with a culture whose importance has grown exponentially throughout the Americas. In fact, although China is a nation not yet very well understood by Westerners residing in South Florida, it exerts very significant power and influence in the global market.
