Belen Jesuit Receives Major Gift

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
At the beginning of the 2017 school year, Jesuit Father Guillermo M. García-Tuñón '87 unveiled the Strategic Plan for the school and laid the roadmap for its future. Since then, Father Willie has been working towards acquiring the necessary commitments to fund the advancement of Belen. As such, we are excited to announce that the Cil Family and two generations of the Garcia family (Eduardo ‘54, Eddy ‘87, and Orlando ‘88) have made a major pledge to fund the capital initiatives of the school as set out in the strategic plan.

“In the Strategic Plan I talk about four pillars (Strengthening our Catholic-Jesuit Identity, Academic Excellence, Forming Well-Rounded Men and Enhancing our Brotherhood) which are not simply words on paper, but have led to actions that have responded to a challenge that will help elevate Belen to greater heights,” said Father Willie. “This gift is an affirmation that we are turning in the right direction to fulfill Belen’s plan for a brighter more educationally robust future. These gifts by the Cil and Garcia families are an extraordinary example of the generosity of our alumni and parents.”

Their generosity paves the way for the future of Belen Jesuit and helps us take one step closer towards the strategic vision and direction in which the school is heading. Together, as a Belen community, we need to continue to lay the groundwork for future Wolverines to benefit and enjoy. There are many projects underway to ensure that the legacy continues strong well into the future. We plan on announcing many more leadership level gifts in the coming months, all aimed at making the vision a reality.

The future is bright at Belen Jesuit. Ongoing projects include the construction of concrete entrances and guard stations at the main gates and the Arroyo Quad where the old pool was located. Still to come is the construction of the Our Lady of Belen Chapel which is scheduled to begin later this year, with an anticipated completion in 2021. Also in the pipeline is the construction of The Goizueta Center where the STEAM program will be housed.  Construction is set to begin at the end of 2019 and will be completed by August 2020. Other projects include a clinic, coaches’ offices and a Field House.

These projects wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the generosity of many people. We continue to strive for greatness and need your help in achieving our goal. Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
