Belen Jesuit Receives Another Major Gift

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
Belen Jesuit is excited to announce another major gift towards fulfilling the goals laid out in the Strategic Plan. The Garrido Family Foundation has made a substantial commitment to help fund the advancement of Belen Jesuit.

The generosity of the Garrido family (José A. Garrido, Sr. '46, José Garrido, Jr. '72, and José Garrido III '99) spans several decades. From supporting building campaigns, to scholarships, to leadership and mentoring students, the Garrido family has always answered the call to help its alma mater. In 2011, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of our school in Miami, the Garrido family gifted the school a renovated central patio. In 2017, the family helped renovate the Chapel of Our Lady.  As an incentive to motivate alumni, in 2017 and 2018, The Garrido Family Foundation issued a matching gift challenge to Belen alumni resulting in a significant increase to the Annual Fund. Additionally, Garrido, Sr. served on the Board of Advisors early in the school’s history in Miami, and his son Garrido, Jr. and grandson Garrido III currently serve on both the Alumni Board and the school’s Board of Advisors.

“The Garrido’s dedication and commitment to education is a true example of leadership,” said Father Willie. “They have and continue to support not only Belen, but other schools through the amazing work done through their foundation. The generosity of this gift is in addition to the donations given over the last 40 years, and will further our goal of ensuring that Belen Jesuit continues its tradition of providing a premier Catholic, Jesuit education. Their love for Belen extends past their connection to the school, spanning three generations. Their devotion to Our Lady and to the magis is what makes them true examples of our motto, men for others. We are very fortunate to count on their friendship and generosity.”

With major projects on the horizon, the future at Belen is exciting. Every gift towards the strategic vision and direction of the school is important and we plan on announcing many more leadership level gifts in the coming months.

We continue to strive for greatness and need your help in achieving our goal. If you would like to contribute to the vision of the school, please contact Phil Fernandez ’94 at ffernandez@belenjesuit.org or call him at 305-804-7683.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
