Pardon Our Dust: Update

Rick Echeverria '84 | Director of Plant Operations
We continue to make great strides to enhance our campus and further the objectives of the vision and direction of the school. Our newest addition are the 4 beautiful tennis courts located behind the Gian Zumpano Aquatic Center. These multi-functional courts will also double as basketball and volleyball courts. The new entrance signs on the 6th Street side are nearly complete and will welcome guests to Belen Jesuit and Villa Javier, the Jesuit residence. Currently under construction are the signs at gate 2 on 127th Avenue. Both locations will also feature a security guard house. We’ve also seen new developments in the Arroyo Quad where we planted a beautiful Banyan Tree. Click here to see drone footage of the tree being planted.

As exciting as all of those things are, there’s still much more to come. In early March we unveiled the renderings for our state of the art STEAM facility. The STEAM program will be located on the second floor of The Roberto Goizueta Athletic Center, where the coaches’ offices, training, wrestling, and weight rooms are currently located. The STEAM program is made possible thanks to a generous $1.5 million-dollar gift made by The Goizueta Foundation. Construction will begin during the 2019-20 academic year. Click here to see the renderings.

Still to come is the construction of the Our Lady of Belen Chapel. “The dream is to have a place on campus where the spiritual and sacramental needs of the whole school community can be addressed,” said Father Willie.  Architect Jorge Hernandez '74 has worked closely with Father Willie to design the chapel and select the artwork which will be featured inside. This project is scheduled to begin in 2019, with an anticipated completion date of 2021.

These projects wouldn’t be happening if it weren’t for the generosity of many people. We continue to strive for greatness and need your help in achieving our goal. Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
