The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills.

The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom learned skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.
 
Ninety-two of our students in the 8th grade Honors Algebra 1 classes took this test on November 13th, along with others all over the country.  They all received a certificate of participation as this is always a challenging exam. The following students received special certificates for their results during a presentation on May 7th.
 
A month later the scores came in and here are the results:
 
  • First place at our school:  Matthew Handel
  • Tied for second place at our school: Jose Costa & Ricardo Yamin
  • Tied for third place at our school: Jake Garcia-Rivera, David Coro & Thomas Fanjul
“We thank the math department for providing this test for our students free of charge and we congratulate these young men as they grow in their knowledge that will open the doors to their future careers,” said Mrs. Patricia Bustamante, Assistant Principal of the Middle School.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
