To the Band of Brothers: October 8, 2020

Fr. Willie ‘87
Good morning!

You may be surprised to find this morning in your inbox an email addressed to you with the title, “To the Band of Brothers.” For nine months it was titled differently. Why the change?

The last couple of days got me thinking. When I introduced the theme “Band of Brothers” at the beginning of the academic year, I mentioned I was inspired by the sophomore class and their response to their brother Anthony Parodi. Like a band of brothers, they rallied around him and have supported him through prayer, videos, and expressions of love and good wishes. How special was his recent birthday when the band of brothers got together again and sent food to his doctors and nurses, birthday cards and presents.

This is what inspired the theme. The beauty is that it easily extends to the whole school community. It’s not only the sophomores that belong to the band. It is not only for Anthony that Belen bands together. The last couple of days have not been easy for any of us. Once again, we were treated to a great showing of courage and conviction by a band of our brothers. The response has tested our patience, our true Christian spirit, and our pride. But as a band of brothers we need to respond, sometimes by simply not responding.

From now on, don’t be surprised when in the morning your inbox contains an email addressed to the band. Know for sure that it’s for you; a member of the band, a band of brothers.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
