Black History Month: Live the Story
Black history month is the celebration of black excellence. Despite the hardships and challenges that African Americans have experienced historically, their impact on society is beyond profound. President Ford, like many presidents, cherished black history month and invited the public to, “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
Black history month appropriately places black historical figures and their accomplishments into the spotlight. February is a month of black pride, validation, and used as an educational tool. The month of February advocates for the idea that Black history should not solely focus on its negative aspects; it should focus on the power, perseverance, and leadership that African Americans have historically exemplified.
For this year’s Black History Month, student and faculty-led committees at Belen Jesuit (Diversity Advisory Panel) are hosting a variety of interesting and engaging events. They will range from round table discussions to guest speakers. This will be Belen’s second annual interactive celebration of Black History Month. We encourage you to attend and can assure you that it will be a great learning experience.
Black History Month Theme & Focus
Week 1 (Feb. 1-5) - Learn the Story: This week the Social Studies department will lay the foundation with exploration and study of the Black experience in their classes.
Week 2 (Feb. 8-12) - Experience the Story: This week the Theology classes will present lessons on Black History and experience. There will also be images of Black Saints and Black Catholics on the road to sainthood on display on the screens throughout campus.
Week 3 (Feb. 16-19) - Experience the Story: This week aims to offer learning opportunities on Black History and Experience through a study of Art, Music, and Literature in courses within the English and Humanities departments. Posters with quotes from artists, writers, thinkers, politicians, and other influential people will be on display throughout campus. The library will display a collection of works by black authors.
Week 4 (Feb. 22-26) - Live the Story: Opportunities for action items will be offered to students in a variety of ways.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
