Belen Jesuit Preparatory School is proud to announce that Belen Jesuit alumnus and NBC News Anchor and Senior National Correspondent Tom Llamas ‘97 will be the speaker at the commencement ceremony for the class of 2021 at the James L. Knight Center on Friday, May 21 at 3:00 p.m. The commencement ceremony will be streamed live on the school’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/BelenJesuit.

Tom Llamas is a graduate of Belen Jesuit from the class of 1997. He graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans with a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Broadcast Journalism and Drama and Speech.

“This will be one of the great honors of my life. I owe a lot to Belen Jesuit,” said Llamas. “The opportunity to share my journey and what I’ve learned since graduating with the next generation is exactly what St. Ignatius envisioned for the greater Jesuit cause. Always give back and keep the fire burning inside.”

“We are deeply honored that Tom accepted our invitation to be part of this important milestone in the life of these young men,” said Fr. Guillermo García-Tuñón, ‘87, President of Belen Jesuit. “He is a wonderful example of a Jesuit educated man who is living the magis every day of his life. I am sure he will leave a profound and lasting message to the 212 students that make up the Class of 2021 and to the whole Belen community.”

Tom is an Emmy award-winning journalist and news anchor. He most recently was the ABC News chief national affairs correspondent, having joined the network in 2014. He has also worked as an investigative reporter and anchor at WNBC in New York and reporter for WTVJ in Miami. At NBC News, he will contribute to shows including Today and NBC Nightly News, as well as breaking news and events coverage.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
