Class of 2023 Banner: Band of Brothers

(The following explanation of the Senior Banner was presented by Marco Alejandro Delamaza '23 at the Baccalaureate Mass on May 15, 2023, at the Our Lady of Belen Chapel. Jake Carlos Garcia-Rivera '23 brought the banner to the altar.) 

First, you’ll notice on the front the same tiled background as we have here in Our Lady of Belen. We wanted to honor the fact that we are the first class of many to come who will call this chapel home. Just as the tiles in the chapel point to Christ on the Cross and Christ in the Eucharist on the altar, we too aim to center our lives in Christ.  

On the back of the flag,  we have honored our brother Anthony by putting his initials and the orange ribbon. While he may not be sitting in the pews with us today, he is eternally a part of the class of 2023. 

Lastly, we have included the simple title “Salve Regina” on the back. Our brotherhood is united under the patronage and protection of our common mother, and the Salve Regina has been an anchor for us in our highs and lows during our time together at Belen. May our Lady of Belen guide us throughout our lives.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
