The Chapel of Our Lady Reopens

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
After nearly six months of construction, the Chapel of Our Lady reopened on November 29.
“Located in the Garrido Family Plaza, the Chapel is at the very heart of our school and has for years been the home of our prayers and petitions,” said Father Willie. “Now, this sacred space has a new look that will help strengthen our Catholic identity, Jesuit character, and lifelong devotion to the Blessed Mother.”

The redesigned altar has been relocated to the east side of the chapel. New wood floors have been put in and a sacristy has been added.  The painting of Our Lady is now behind the altar. The reconfigured chapel has also been modified to reduce the noise that was previously generated by the air conditioning units. The project was led by alumnus and architect Jorge Hernandez '71.

“The new renovations have really highlighted what this chapel is meant to be and giving it the name of Chapel of Our Lady  really encompasses what our mission at Belen is, which is to serve our Lady and our God,” said Eric Lastres '18, President of the Esto Vir club.

Now that the chapel has reopened the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will resume there on the first Friday of every month. The community is invited to spend time with Jesus and volunteer its time to be Guardians of the Blessed Sacrament by contacting the Office of Campus Ministry at 786-621.4125.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
