The first week of April was a good one for the Belen Jesuit Wolverines' sports teams.

The Belen Jesuit crew team competed at the San Diego Crew Classic the weekend of April 1. The Lightweight 8+ crew repeated its gold medal performance, winning by open water with a 10-second margin over the silver medalist. This victory once again ranks Belen's team as the #1 lightweight program in the country and positions them as the favorites at the Youth National Championships, which will take place in June. Belen also holds the distinction of being the only scholastic program to win at this level at this prestigious regatta.

On April 5, the varsity tennis team won the district championship. It’s the team’s fourth district title in seven years. The team accumulated 17 of a possible 21 points to win the district. "I'm very proud of the team, especially the seniors, who get to finish their high school careers as district champs,” said JD Barbosa, head tennis coach. “We made it a goal to bring this championship back to Belen and are excited to have made that happen." Special congratulations to Charlie Grande, who will be competing in the state tournament for singles. Charlie and Danny Martinez also will be competing in the state tournament for doubles.

The varsity lacrosse team defeated Ransom Everglades April 6 to win the District 30 championship for a second time in a row. The game was played before a crowd of 700 lacrosse fans at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami. Belen scored first and never looked back. On the first 10 shots on goal they scored seven times. The final score was 12-4. Deiter Prussing and Nico Smith scored three goals and had one assist each for the Wolverines. Ignacio Lopez Castrohad two goals and 1 assist, as did Maurice Milton. Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
