Keeping Up With the Wolverines

The top high school athletes and coaches in Miami-Dade were honored May 23 at the 2017 Miami Herald Athletic Awards breakfast presented by the Orange Bowl.
“We are very proud of our student-athletes who excel both on the playing field and in the classroom,” said Jose E. Roca, principal. “They serve as examples of one of our core values, the Magis, to do more for the Greater Glory of God. May their recognition be an inspiration to our Belen Community and the broader Miami-Dade Community as well.”
 
The Wolverines took home many accolades, including:
 
  • The Miami Herald's All Dade Breakfast Don Chaney became one of the youngest recipient of the All Dade Athlete of the Year, he is Belen's second winner in the category, Guillermo Echarte won it in 2008.
 
  • Coach Richard Stuart was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
 
  • Junior Joshua Collins was chosen Cross Country Runner of the Year and Roberto Fernandez was chosen as Lacrosse Player of the Year.
 
  • Coaches Frankie Ruiz (Cross Country) and JD Barbosa (Tennis) earned Coach of the Year in their respective sport.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
