FCTA’s 13th Annual Florida Statewide Chinese Competition (FSCC)

The 13th Annual Florida State Chinese Competition will be held at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School on February 23 and 24. Approximately 260 Students from 21 different schools will attend this two day competition co-hosted by Belen Jesuit and the Florida Chinese Teachers Association (FCTA).  
 
The FCTA invited every middle school and high school in Florida that offers Chinese classes. The competition will include at least two academic tests. Participants must choose from speaking, reading and writing. or middle school and upper school Level 1 and Level 2, Writing and Reading are combined (students must participate in BOTH events). Both traditional and simplified versions will be available on all tests. To recognize their performance, each student will receive a ranking certificate for every event he/she completes. The team competition will consist of a Jeopardy style contest. Questions will be on Chinese culture, language, traditions, history, geography, landmarks, people, literature, art, inventions, news, major events, etc.
 
Mr. Philip Wang, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami will address the participants during the opening event on Friday, February 23 beginning at 5:45 p.m. in the school Dining Hall. Chinese cultural performances will also take place at the opening event including a Chinese Dancing Lion.
 
Competitions will take place Saturday, February 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Local schools participating include Belen Jesuit, Carrolton School of the Sacred Heart, Chinese Learning Center of Miami, Gulliver Academy, Gulliver Preparatory School, and Pine Crest School Fort Lauderdale.

Florida Statewide Chinese Competition (FSCC) is an event dedicated for mainstream middle school and upper school students. It is completely planned by the teachers of participating schools and other members of Florida Chinese Teachers Association (FCTA).

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
