Reyes Magis Thanksgiving

Crescencio J. Ruiz '76 | Magis Chair
More than 300 adults and children took part in the annual Reyes Magis Thanksgiving event on November 10 at Gesu Catholic Church in downtown Miami. Families in need were given lunch, along with gift cards and turkeys for the Thanksgiving holiday, courtesy of the Belen Alumni Association’s Reyes Magis Campaign. Over 100 students from Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, St. Brendan High School, Christopher Columbus High School, plus other parochial schools helped in the distribution of the meals. Our 50 Belen alumni and their wives and family members were an instrumental part of the success of the event.

Thank you to all who contributed and assisted in making this annual event possible, especially Gesu’s Pastor, Jesuit Father Eduardo Alvarez ‘63. Thanks to the Coral Gables chapter of the Knights of Columbus, under the direction of Waldo Toyos '91, for donating the turkeys. Thanks to the Belen students for providing the dry goods gift bags to complement the turkeys, and to the 6th graders for personalizing the gifts by writing notes to each and every one of the recipients. A big thank you to Al Ledo '76 and Gabby Dieppa '96 for their leadership "on the ground", as members of the Magis committee. A very special thank you to Belen professors and club moderators Diana Fernandez and Johnny Calderin for their support this year and every year at every Magis event.

Next up is the Reyes Magis Christmas toy drive. Belen Jesuit and the Belen Alumni Association will be working on this joint venture together, which will culminate with the toy distribution on December 22 at Gesu. Alumni, be on the lookout for information regarding the December 4th happy hour at Shula's 347, which will be an opportunity for alums to drop off toys and make a contribution.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
