The school community gathered on the morning of November 13 to celebrate two state championship titles won by Belen student athletes. “On behalf of the school administration, the faculty, the staff, all the students, the alumni – 8,000 strong throughout the world – I want to thank them and congratulate them for being truly men for others,” said Father Guillermo Manuel Garcia-Tuñon , S.J. '87. “Their hard work has paid off, and we are very proud of them.”

The two state championship titles were in cross country and swimming. On November 9, Belen swimmer Andres Wong took first place at the Class 3A State Championship in the 200 Free with a time of 1:39.02. “Work ethic is the team’s major goal,” said Swimming Coach Kirk Peppas. “Every athlete like Andres is born with some amount of God-given ability. Being able to focus and not lose sight of that goal is Andres’s strength!” In addition to the state title, Wong’s victory in the 200 Free and 3rd place finish in the 100 Free earned him All-American status.

On November 10, the Belen Jesuit Cross Country team brought home another Class 3A State Championship title, the sixth such title in nine years. Individual winners were sophomore Javier Vento in first place and freshman Adam Magoulas in second. With the win, Coach Frankie Ruiz and the cross country team are tied with Largo for most state titles in Florida history at 10. “It’s not easy to defend your title, but these guys did it with class,” said Coach Frankie Ruiz ’96. “I’m extremely proud of them and you should be too.”

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
