Our top priority at Belen Jesuit is always the health and safety of all our students. As such, we continue to monitor information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19). We will share updates on this page as they become available.

  • What decisions have been made by the school administration?

    In line with the decision made by the Governor of Florida and the Archdiocese of Miami, we have decided that the campus will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year. Classes will continue via distance learning. Additional information regarding final exams and community service requirements will be sent at a later time. 
     
    Students will be expected to complete their assigned coursework just as they would while attending classes on campus. If a student cannot attend a virtual class due to sickness, their parent/guardian must email attendance@belenjesuit.org. The Belen Virtual Learning Protocol can be accessed here Additionally, click here to read guidelines for online learning. 
  • How can my son complete his service hours?

    You can find some suggestions and these policy adjustments on our service board FIND WAYS TO SERVE-COVID EDITION  You will find large posts with focus areas and each is structured around Prayer, Learning/Reflection, Response.  This is an effort to encourage students to continue to think about encountering the other in our community in prayer, learning, and action.  These are essential elements for personal and spiritual growth, that is at the heart of Ignatian Spirituality. We encourage students to continue exercising their spiritual energy for the well being of others and also for their own well being and growth.

    TEMPORARY ADJUSTMENTS TO TYPES OF SERVICE ACCEPTED AND REPORTING POLICY:
    • Students are now allowed to submit a picture of themselves as verification on MobileServe to report for SOME types of service, Check the post for instructions or ask via email if you are unsure.  This is only if a letter of confirmation or other agency documentation is not available. 
    • In an effort to reduce email overload, please don't send an email to let us know that you have just reported something on MobileServe, it will be seen in the system. Please allow a few weeks as there are many to process.
    • Donation drop-offs are now allowed as a service activity so long as the student provides provide proof (in a picture) that they were present at delivery. Students can report on MobileServe using the guidelines shown below.  We normally don't accept donation drop-offs as service activities since it is not a supervised action. Therefore, we ask that the student use their honest judgment, and NOT inflate hours. Please report only within the allowable range for that activity.   (Please do not submit the number of hours of service based on the number of items in the donation bag. )
      • Dropping off donations: Students must be present at delivery can be reported in as 1.5 to 2 hours maximum of service. A PICTURE AT POINT OF DELIVERY IS REQUIRED
      • Drop off of donations by the student -that required prior preparation at home by the student: can be reported as 1 to 3 hours maximum. A PICTURE OF STUDENT IN ACTIVITY AT HOME AND ALSO AT POINT OF DELIVERY IS REQUIRED.
      • Please do not send via email any pictures of your son in a service activity. I am not able to do anything with those since we no longer have physical files. 
    • All Service activities must still be reported on MobileServe PROPERLY. They must contain the name of the organization (please not a street address), date, and person in charge, if available, description of service, along with pictures or letter of documentation. A PICTURE AT POINT OF DELIVERY IS REQUIRED (This does not apply if the activity if it is Belen sponsored such as peer tutoring or Virtual Hurtado)
    • Service must not be for a relative.  We expect you to do that already.  Community Service means you serve the community and preferably through an organization.
    • High School Students can serve their 25 hours in any category, as we have temporarily waived the minimum requirement for Direct service.
    • The deadline to submit service reports on MobileServe has been extended for 6th through 11th-grade students through the end of July.  The senior deadline is May 19th.
    We have adjusted the service policy to allow different activities and some have little to no supervision from an organization or from Belen staff.  Therefore, we are trusting our students not to take advantage of the current pandemic by inflating the time served.  You have plenty of time to serve until July 31st.  In this crucial moment, your integrity and your service are vital to our community.
  • How are final exams being affected by the pandemic?

    Seniors:
    Semester exams have been canceled, except for AP mock exams.  AP mock exams will continue as planned, but will not be worth more than 10% of the semester grade.  If a senior wishes to improve his grade in Math, Theology, or a one-semester course, he may request to take a final exam from his teacher.  The final exam may be a project, paper, or actual exam. The teacher will choose the format. Senior Week is May 4 through 8, click here to see the flyer. Final grades will be posted on Monday, May 18.  

    Sixth through eleventh grades:
    Semester exams have been canceled except for the AP mock exams.  AP mock exams will continue as planned, but will not be worth more than 10% of the semester grade. The last day of classes will be Friday, May 29 and final grades will be posted on Monday, June 8th.  
  • Does the school have a COVID-19 Relief Fund?

    Yes, it was established on April 27th. The COVID-19 Relief Fund to help families in our Belen community who are facing a difficult time as a result of the pandemic. “We are all in this together” is a phrase that we hear often and what better way to put it into practice than by helping our neighbors.   • Has anyone in the school community tested positive for COVID-19?

    We were informed on March 21st that the parent of one of our Juniors has tested positive for COVID-19. The parent returned to Miami from Spain on March 12th and immediately self-isolated as a precaution. Because of this, we believe the risk to our community is low.  We are pleased to share that the parent, who is self-quarantining, is feeling better and is expected to make a full recovery. No one else in the family is showing symptoms.

    On March 26 the administration was informed that a member of our staff has tested positive for COVID-19. The staff member likely contracted the virus on the weekend of March 14. Unaware that contact was made with someone who had been infected, the person did come to work on March 16 but had limited contact with people on that day. The person was tested on March 18 and is quarantined and getting better.

    We are sending our best wishes and prayers to those affected and for a speedy recovery. 

    We encourage anyone who is showing symptoms to seek medical attention. Please be assured that the school has been cleaned thoroughly and in accordance with best practice protocols advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We will continue to update our webpage accordingly. 

    If a student/parent/employee tests positive for the coronavirus please email Mr. Roca directly at jroca@belenjesuit.org. We urge you to follow the advice of the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) and practice social-distancing as well as adhering to self-monitoring and hygiene recommendations.
  • Is Belen Jesuit offering Mass online?

    The Archdiocese of Miami has prudently canceled public Masses until we get the Coronavirus COVID-19 under better control. Archbishop Wenski has asked parishes that are able to do so, to stream the Mass live. Belen wants to do its part as well.

    Sunday Mass will be streamed live from the Belen Jesuit Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at 11 a.m. and at 9:30 a.m on weekdays. Holy Thursday Mass will be at 8:00 p.m. and the Good Friday Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. You can find our live stream at the Belen Jesuit YouTube channel or on our Instagram page. The Masses will be archived to those pages as well, and the link from YouTube will be shared on our Facebook page.

    The Church has always recognized that there are circumstances that may keep the faithful from attending Mass. Sickness, inability to travel, etc. are examples of reasons that make it difficult to go to Mass. For this reason, we have spiritual communion, and while we cannot receive the body and blood of Jesus sacramentally, we can receive him spiritually in our hearts.

    These are challenging times. For this reason, it is most important to keep praying and there is no more powerful prayer than the Eucharist.
  • Can I send prayer intentions to the Jesuits?

    Yes, please email your prayer intentions to prayers@belenjesuit.org. The Miami Jesuits will pray for all intentions received and will be offering them in Mass and in their community prayers. 
  • Have any events been canceled or postponed?

    With the move to distance learning, all school events (including practices, games, club meetings, etc.) will be canceled or postponed. Activities will not resume until Belen Jesuit reopens.

    The following events are postponed:
    • Ignite the Night concert featuring The Call scheduled for March 13
    • Speech and Debate SFCFL Grand Finals scheduled for March 14
    • STEAM Family Night scheduled for March 19
    • MAGIS Helping Hands scheduled for March 21
    • Alumni Tour to Boston, MA scheduled for March 28
    • Honor Society Induction  scheduled for March 30
    • ACT Aspire Testing scheduled for April 1
    • Downtown Miami Alumni Luncheon scheduled for April 2
    • Alumni Night scheduled for April 4
    • The Founding of a Nation trip scheduled to leave on April 4
    • Senior Gratitude scheduled for April 7 and 8
    • Overseas Study Program to Israel and Jordan scheduled for June 10-21
    Once the new dates have been selected they will be communicated to the school community.

  • What happens if I need to take an AP Exam?

    The AP CollegeBoard has made several decisions that will impact this current school year only, 2019-20. 

    In summary, they are:
    • Traditional face-to-face exam administrations will not take place. Students can take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home
    • The exam will only include topics and skills most AP teachers and students have already covered in class by early March.
    • The full exam schedule, specific free-response question types that will be on each AP Exam, and additional testing details will be available by April 3.
    • Students and teachers can attend free, live AP review courses, delivered by AP teachers from across the country.
    Please be reassured that our AP teachers are making sure that our students are prepared for the exams.  The administration will be meeting with all of our AP teachers next week to discuss the new guidelines from the CollegeBoard and support our teachers in delivering instruction.   • What is the school doing regarding school-sponsored travel?

    In an abundance of caution, the school administration has decided to cancel the following trips:
    • Senior trip to Machu Picchu
    • Band trip to Festival Disney in Walt Disney World
    • Thespians trip to the State Convention in Tampa
    • Speech & Debate FFL Novice States Competition
    Those affected by this decision have been notified. We continue to monitor the situation and will make updates as needed.
     
  • Are the school counselors available for sessions?

    Yes, they will be offering phone counseling sessions for Belen students as needed.

    If you would like to schedule a phone counseling session please do the following:
    1. Email your grade-level counselor 
    2. Include in the email a date and time that you are available to speak during school hours
    3. Include in the email the best phone number to reach you
    Your counselor will call you at the scheduled time. Please note that the phone number may appear as an “unidentified caller.”  Students may schedule phone counseling sessions during non-instructional class time only.  You may also communicate with your counselor through email at anytime.
  • What do I do if my iPad is cracked or my screen is damaged?

    The health and wellness of our students and staff come first. However, we understand that you may need your iPad repaired during this time. We’ve put together a contactless procedure to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and maintain social distancing. REPAIRS MUST BE SCHEDULED AHEAD OF TIME at http://www.belenjesuit.org/contactlessrepair.

    THE DAY BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
    1. After your appointment is scheduled, a member of the Tech Team will contact you at the number provided to run a diagnostics test on your iPad. 
    2. Perform an iCloud back up the night before your contactless pickup. For more information about what is backed up visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859

    ON THE DAY OF YOUR APPOINTMENT
    1. Place your broken iPad in the trunk of your car. THE CASE MUST BE REMOVED FROM YOUR IPAD. 
    2. When you arrive at Belen, please drive up to the entrance of the Administration Building (SW 6th Street entrance). Please be on time as we are only going to campus to assist you at the time of your appointment
    3. Please do not get out of the car and keep the window closed.
    4. Pop open your trunk and we will pick up the damaged iPad and put the replacement iPad in your trunk. You will need to set up the new device once you are back at home. 
    Make sure you have MORE than one trusted phone number on your account. If you no longer have access to your trusted phone number or the number is incorrect, you will not be able to log into your Apple ID account to set up your new iPad.   • What do I do if my Apple Pencil is not working?

    If your Apple Pencil is not working please try the following steps to troubleshoot:
     
    1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
    2. On the same screen, look under My Devices for your Apple Pencil. If you see it, tap (i). Then tap Forget this Device.
    3. Restart your iPad, then try to pair again. Connect your Apple Pencil into your iPad and tap the Pair button if it appears after a few seconds.
    4. If you don't see the Pair button, wait for one minute while your Apple Pencil charges. Then try connecting your Apple Pencil again and wait until you see the Pair button.

    If you still don’t see the Pair button, there is likely an issue with your Apple Pencil needing to be repaired.

    The Belen Jesuit campus is currently closed until further notice. Therefore, we are unable to assist you with your Apple Pencil repair to protect the safety of our Tech Team and your families. If financially feasible, you can order a replacement pencil from Apple, a Logitech Crayon or a stylus. Please see the following links.

  • My son has PE, what now?

    Please note that although PE does not have required work to do, the coaches have placed links and exercise routines for our students to follow in order to stay active at home. If your son was doing rehab with one of our athletic trainers, they should email them directly for at home instructions. Additionally, PE is not a Zoom class. Attendance will not be taken for PE. 
  • What can parents do to help?

    It is our sincere hope that you consider the wellbeing of the community at large and help us enforce the effectiveness of our plan by practicing social distancing while this situation continues. 

    As always, to prevent widespread communicable illnesses in the school, we recommend that your son stay home from school if he is experiencing flu or cold symptoms. Colds and most viral illnesses are the most contagious during the first 48 hours.  A student who has a fever should remain at home until “fever free” for a minimum of 24 hours without the need for over the counter medicines, as this only masks symptoms. A student who has started antibiotics needs to be on the medication for 48 hours before considered non-contagious and able to return to school. Remember that keeping a sick child at home will help minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.
     
  • What additional measures are being taken at Belen Jesuit?

    During our time away from the campus, the offices, classrooms, and common spaces will be cleaned and sanitized to the extent possible, and in accordance with best practice protocols advised by the Center for Disease Control.

    As always, the school provides access to clean and functional handwashing stations, soap, paper towels, and alcohol‐based hand sanitizer.  
     
    The custodial staff of Belen Jesuit routinely cleans and disinfects all frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as doorknobs, banisters, countertops, faucet handles, and phones. In light of the Coronavirus, our staff has increased its cleaning and disinfecting efforts in an attempt to stay ahead of the virus. 
  • What happens if a student or employee comes to school sick?

    Faculty, staff, volunteers, and students are to stay home if/when they are sick. They have been reminded to not come to school until they are free of fever for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication. 

    The faculty will report students who are sick to the nurse immediately. A decision will be made with the Dean of Men as to whether the student should be sent home. Additionally, f

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
