Science National Honor Society

The Belen Jesuit Science National Honor Society (SNHS) honors the school’s highest-achieving students in the area of Science with the aim of engendering a sense of curiosity and innovation in a generation of young thinkers who will be Catholic leaders in the future of industry, research and scientific exploration. ​​To qualify for membership, the student must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a junior or senior
  • A minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Be enrolled in the Honors or AP Science course in the candidate’s grade level and earn a grade of 90% or higher in each semester of their Honors Science course or 87% or higher in their AP Science course
  • No grade lower than a 1 in conduct and effort in an advanced Science course
  • Approval from the Science Department

To remain a member, a student must:
  • Maintain a minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Maintain a minimum grade of 90% in each semester of their Honors Science course or of 87% in each semester of their AP Science course
  • Maintain a grade of 1 in conduct and effort in the student’s advanced Science course for the year
  • Attend SNH meetings and sponsored activities, including 10 hours of service in the Peer Tutoring program

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
