1854 Day of Giving SUCCESS

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
This year’s Day of Giving is the most successful fundraising campaign we’ve held. With 1,180 donors, the Belen community rallied to raise $398,568 to benefit the Fund for Belen. Parents, students, alumni, employees, grandparents, and friends of Belen joined forces not just to reach our goal of 900 donors, but to blow it out of the water.

The momentum of this year’s campaign, themed 1854 as a tribute to the school's 170th anniversary, was launched on May 6 at noon and never slowed down. From challenges being met to incentives to help drive donations to fun giveaways at drop-off and pick-up, everyone felt the excitement.

Helping to rally the troops, the Belen bands performed at pick-up on May 6th and drop-off on May 7th. Keeping the energy high was Waldo the Wolverine and student-athletes to help promote the 1854 Day of Giving. Capping off the fun was Burnie from the Miami Heat, who elevated the tempo and got everyone energized and ready to reach the goal.

“Extraordinary,” said Fr. Willie. “The Belen community never disappoints and always rises to the occasion. We thought we had set a lofty goal of 900 donors. To say we are happy with the results is an understatement. It shows our community believes in the direction we are headed and trusts us to move forward confidently. This money will go towards the Fund for Belen, which touches every aspect of life at Belen and helps strengthen the Financial Assistance Program. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!”

With the goal surpassed, students will be able to enjoy a dress-down day on Thursday, May 22. The class of 2031 had the most donations with 180, and will receive an ice cream social at an upcoming lunch. More than 750 parents contributed, and alumni also stepped up and helped support their alma mater with 434 gifts made. Special shout out to the grandparents, friends of Belen and faculty and staff who helped to make this possible.

Way to go, Wolverine Nation!

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
