Class of 1990 & 1992 Carolina Calderin Scholarship

Most of us, when we see someone who needs help, a task that could be done better or a situation that could be improved, we ask ourselves and others “Why don’t ‘they’ do something about this?” Not Carola. She never waited for “them” to act. Carola would take action herself, in her quiet and unassuming manner, never seeking recognition or expecting anything in return.

Of the many causes that Carola supported, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was one that she always held especially close to her heart. She was always active in the background, enhancing and underwriting a better Belen experience for the entire school community.

Ensuring access to a Belen education to those who could not otherwise afford it was an important part of her contributions. At one point, Carola was the single biggest aggregator of scholarship giving for the school. Generous to the end, she paid for a student’s tuition
two weeks before she passed away, unbeknownst even to the school.

We therefore cannot think of a more fitting memorial to Carola’s generosity, or one that would please her more, than to memorialize her with a scholarship endowment at Belen that carries her name. To that end, we have established the Carolina “Carola” Calderin Scholarship Endowment. In just a few days the Endowment has already generated over $150,000 in initial commitments, and we would like to grow the Endowment as much as possible to ensure a lasting fund for students in need to be able to receive a Belen education for many years to come.

In order to continue her legacy of unwavering support and to inspire others to take up the torch she so generously carried for our sake all these years, it is incumbent upon all of us who knew her and remember her love for our school, to contribute what we can. For so many of us at Belen, Carola was the “they” that became “me”. Now, “we” need to become the “they” that carries on in her footsteps, in her name, for many years to come.

Thank you for considering your participation in this challenge, we look forward to welcoming you to our cause.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
