Father Sardiña, S.J. Memorial Fishing Tournament & Dock Party

On Saturday, June 8, 2024, the Belen Alumni Association of Jesuit Schools from Cuba and Miami will host the Father Sardiña, S.J. Memorial Fishing Tournament and Dock Party. This tournament will benefit the Fr. Jorge Sardiña, S.J. ‘45 Scholarship Fund and is open to the entire Belen community.

Father Jorge Sardiña, S.J. was a member of the Colegio de Belén class of 1945. He entered the Society of Jesus on September 8, 1947, and was ordained a priest on June 20, 1959. Fr. Sardiña first arrived at Belen Jesuit in Miami in 1961. When he was asked to describe Belen, he said that only one word came to mind: “Family.” He served as an English and theology teacher, as well as a spiritual counselor for middle-school students, creating a solid foundation in their faith and devotion to God. Fr. Sardiña died in Miami on February 9, 2008. He was posthumously inducted into the Belen Hall of Fame inaugural class. For more information, click here.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
