During the week of March 13-17 our school will be celebrating Ignatian Week. The theme for this year is “Esto Vir: Walk Ignatian”.
Building on Fr. Willie Garcia-Tunon’s theme for the school year, the week will focus on celebrating our Ignatian identity and how our Ignatian ideals help to form strong, moral “Men for Others”.
There will be different events planned for the week which include a school-wide Mass to open the week; visits from alumni who will speak to the students about the impact their Jesuit education had on them and influenced the men they have become; the commitment Mass for Christian Life Community members; and an opportunity for students to participate in different works of service. There will also be a day of appreciation for our teachers and a book fair featuring religious books and items.
In the Theology classrooms, students will study about the life of Saint Ignatius, the history of the Jesuit Order, Jesuit Saints, Ignatian ideals such as “Finding God in all Things” and the impact of the Jesuits in our world today. Many departments of the school are involved in planning the events for the week. We encourage our entire school community to celebrate with us, to learn more about the founder of our school and what it means to be open to growth, loving, religious, intellectually competent and committed to doing justice. Following in the steps of our founder Saint Ignatius, let us come together to share in our very special Ignatian traditions and history.
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
