Grandparents Club Celebrates Mass

Tommy de Quesada | Dean of Men
Established during the 2015-2016 academic year, the Grandparents Club began with the goal of helping at Tombola.
Now, in its second year, the club is searching for other ways to get involved at the school.

“The Grandparents Club was founded last academic year with the hope to get the ‘abuelitos’ involved at the school and with our grandchildren,” said Lucila Jimenez, founder of the club. “It's been a wonderful experience so far, and we are eager to grow the club and get more grandparents involved.”

The idea is to foster a community of inclusion and participation. Grandparents are a source of great information and comfort so it only makes sense that we offer them a place at the school.

Father Ernesto Fernandez-Travieso, SJ is the club’s chaplain. He celebrated a mass for the members of the club and their grandchildren on March 23 in the Chapel of Our Lady. “We are grateful to each of you for being here and look forward to being able to celebrate with even more ‘abuelitos’ in the years to come,” said Father Fernandez-Travieso.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
