Being Men for Others is Not Optional

Crescencio J. Ruiz ’76 | Alumni Association Magis Chair
Personal sacrifice, giving to those in need, gathering in Jesus’ name are some of things instilled in all of us at one point in time during our days as students at Belen.
In fact, it is our duty as Men for Others to fulfill those roles.

On April 1, over 200 people from different organizations gathered at Belen Jesuit to pack 34,000 meals for those who suffer from chronic hunger as a result of cyclical drought and flooding in the African nation of Burkina Faso (West Africa). For the third year in a row, Belen’s Alumni Association teamed up with the Knights of Columbus, Belen’s Key Club, and the Professional Advisor’s Board of Catholic Relief Services to organize the “CRS Helping Hands” event.

Father Willie celebrated mass in the Chapel of Our Lady to get the event started off on the right foot. During his homily, he reminded everyone there, young and old, that as followers of Christ, we are responsible to help all of those who are less fortunate. He made sure that we all understood that being there for others is not an option- it is a duty to be fulfilled with love and in community with others.

Thanks to all of those who participated. Our Alumni Association will continue to strive to sponsor events which will give us opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of the less fortunate.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
