For the last couple of years, the Beta Club has sent support packages to troops overseas. This year, the members of the club assembled packages that included snacks, toiletries, and a blanket.
The packages were sent to servicemen in Southwest Asia.
“My guys have been in the Air Force from as little as 6 months to 21 years,” said SMSgt John W. Wilson, Jr. who received Belen’s packages. “We will serve roughly 6-7 months deployed to our location and will spend several birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, childbirths, and most of all time away from our families. We have had a few childbirths already and we at least got the guys off for the day so they could phone home. My guys are very humbled and thankful that you and your Beta Club supported us through the holiday season.”
It was a special coincidence that the soldier receiving and distributing the items this year was also a member of the Beta Club in his high school years. Our Beta Club members felt so connected that we have decided to continue to support this troop for the remainder of the school year.
The National Beta Club is the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization in America. And for more than 80 years, it has prepared today's students to be tomorrow's leaders.
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain. The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline. In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty. The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
