PARK(ing) Day

Peter Perez | Assistant STEAM Director
After a week of preparing and planning, the STEAM Club surprised the school community by building a parklet in a parking spot. PARK(ing) Day is a worldwide annual event where teams of community members repurpose a parking spot into a parklet as a way to transform urban areas.

The Belen Jesuit team was given total creative freedom and was empowered to use the space however it thought that the rectangle area of gravel could best be utilized. The initiative was created by Rebar Group, Inc. to bring awareness to the amount of space that a parked vehicle takes up, and how with just a little creativity, the same spot can be used as a place where people can meet and spend time together. Our Wolverines transformed the parking spot into a relaxing green area with a swinging bench in our own Belen parking lot.

“We hope you saw our installation; this is the first of many pop-up events that will be organized through our STEAM program to officially begin in the 2020-2021 academic year,” said Adriana Da Silva, STEAM Director. “We will be exposing our students to the interdisciplinary nature of STEAM and engaging them in real-world events, hosted through our STEAM club. Events will range from competitions to field trips, to explorations of topics that use design-thinking strategies, exposing students to future workplace challenges.”

Students are taking ownership of all their work. As our juniors who participated exclaimed, “Guys, we built a bench!” We would like to thank Oliver Romanach ‘21, Wadih Pazos ‘21, and John Hernandez ‘21 who designed and brought this idea to life. If any student is interested in joining the STEAM club, the first meeting will be held on Monday, September 23 at 3 p.m. in room S-105 or you can email Ms. Da Silva at
adasilva@belenjesuit.org for more information.

Still on the horizon is the construction of the STEAM Center, which will be located on the second floor of The Roberto Goizueta Athletic Center. Construction will begin during the fall and will be completed in time for the 2020-21 academic year.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
