On May 5, a virtual signing ceremony was held on Zoom for seven Belen Jesuit student-athletes. In general, about 7% of high school athletes (about 1 in 14) go on to play a varsity sport in college. The school campus has been closed since March 16 as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The following student-athletes committed to playing at the collegiate level:

Crew:
  • Stephen Brennan - Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA
  • Christopher Rodriguez - University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI

Football:
  • Frankie Aguero-Salve Regina University, Newport, RI
  • Sebastian Alonso - University of Maryland, College Park, MD
  • Ralph Desantis - Allegheny College, Meadville, PA

Soccer:
  • Daniel Comas Sanchez - New York University, New York, NY

Swimming:
  • Andres Wong - Boston College, Newton, Massachusetts

“I am proud of these young men who, as true student-athletes, have achieved the Magis - both on the field and in the classroom. Belen has overcome many obstacles in its history and the COVID-19 pandemic is just another example. Honoring the hard work of these young men is a priority and we are happy that technology is allowing us to celebrate their achievements,” said José E. Roca, Principal. “Congratulations to them as well as their families, coaches, counselors, and teachers who have supported their formation throughout their years at Belen.”

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
