2022 Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

The 2022 Belen Sports Hall of Fame welcomed six new individual members and one team in a ceremony that took place on May 7. Over 100 people attended the event. The following gentlemen joined the 61 individuals and three teams already inducted into the HOF:

David Bouza ‘02 - Track & Field and Wrestling
He was a six-year varsity letterman in wrestling and participated in varsity track and field. He was the first 8th grader to win a district title and was a four-time state qualifier. He won the state championship in 2002 and was also Athlete of the Year. From 2003 to 2005 he was the assistant varsity wrestling coach at Belen Jesuit. 

Luis Fernández de Castro ‘54 - Baseball and Track & Field
He played on the varsity baseball and varsity track and field teams. Luis went on to play for The University of Havana Track and Field team and won the Cuban Champion in the javelin in 1959. He is considered one of the best all-around athletes of his decade.

Eduardo Gross ‘88 - Football and Track & Field
He was a 4-year letterman in football and a 3-year letterman in track and field. In football, he was named offense MVP senior year. He set Belen’s single-season rushing record and led Miami Dade county in rushing yards during his senior year. Eduardo was also voted athlete of the year in 1988. In track, he set school records in the 4x100m relay team, 100m, and 200m and was awarded the Coaches Award in 1987 and MVP in 1988. He went on to play college football at JNU.

Alejandro Hoyos ‘92 - Baseball, Basketball, and Football
He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. Was named All Dade second team in football, honorable mention in basketball and baseball, Miami Herald scholar-athlete finalist, and Athlete of the year in 1992.  He was the recipient of the national football foundation and college hall of fame Jack Harding Chapter Scholar-Athlete Award.

Marcos A. Macau ‘97 -  Basketball, Track & Field, and Volleyball
Played four years of varsity volleyball and basketball and two years of track and field.  Among his accolades as a Wolverine are: All County 1st Team VolleyBall - 1997, 2nd Team All-County Basketball - 2 years, Belen Varsity Basketball MVP - 2 Years, Belen Varsity Volleyball MVP - 2 years, Belen Athlete of the Year - 1997, and Miami Herald Athlete of the Year, Volleyball - 1997. Additionally, he played professionally Beach Volleyball, AVP, and European FIVB Tour participant.

Luis Rojas ‘03 - Baseball 
He was a 3-year varsity baseball letterman and was named to the All-County first team in 2001, 2002, and 2003. He was named to the All-State 2nd team in 2001 and the All-State 1st team in 2002 and 2003. Luis led the 4A classification in hitting in 2001. He went on to play four years in college and is currently the strength and conditioning coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1960 Track & Field Team - Lifetime Achievement Award
This group of athletes competed in the Pepe Barrientos Track competition to compete against the best that the communist regime had to offer. They not only won the competition but set records in the 4x100m relay and the 4x200m relay. Individually these athletes excelled in other sports such as baseball, basketball, and soccer.  They were the last group to graduate at Belen in Cuba and they call themselves Los Cadetes de la Reina. The team members are: Leonel Abreu (RIP), Jose DeGoti, Andres Mera, Alfredo Oliva, Ricardo Paez, Ramon Poo and Alberto Suarez.

“These gentlemen represent hard work and determination,” said Alumni Director Carlos Bravo ‘86. “They each were stellar athletes during their time at Belen and without a shadow of a doubt made a difference to their teams. They are wonderful examples for our current student-athletes and I congratulate them on being inducted into our hall of fame.”

The Belen Sports Hall of Fame was instituted in 2007. Members are chosen on the basis of their playing ability, sportsmanship, character, and their contribution to their team or teams and to the game they participated in for el Colegio de Belén, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, el Colegio de Dolores, Sagua, Electromecánica, and Montserrat.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
