Wolverine Cross Country is Leading the Pack

CJ Cristobal ‘16 | Communications Specialist
As the school closed for Thanksgiving break and most of us took our foot off the gas, the Wolverine Cross Country team kicked it into high gear!

Congratulations to the Cross Country team who won their 7th consecutive State Championship on November 17. This marks the Wolverines' 51st successive appearance at the FHSAA State Final and 15th win. Then, on November 19, 48 hours after winning the State Championship in Tallahassee, the Belen cross country team won the Nike NXR Southeast Regional Championship in Cary, North Carolina, on Sunday morning. The top teams in the southeast from 12 states compete for two spots for an all-expense paid trip to Nike NXN Nationals in Portland, Oregon. The team scored 84 points and set a team average of 15:30. They were led by Senior Joshua Ruiz, who ran the 5K course in 15:09.

When asked what makes this team so great, Coach Frankie Ruiz ‘96 said, “I call this team the Navy Seals. Much like them, this group of young men doesn’t have off days. They have trained to consistently raise their ceiling but more importantly, they have elevated the floor. No matter what, they don’t let each other down. The sum of their race performances is beyond any team that has come before them. The 2023 team is considered the best team in the history of Florida. These guys are very special and their unique story is still being written.”

The team will compete at the National Championship in Portland, Oregon, on December 2nd. This is the second consecutive time Belen has qualified for the National meet and the third team in program history.

We look forward to watching our Wolverines make history as they push their limits in pursuing the program's first National Championship!

Update (12/4/23): The Wolverines ended the season with a 4th-place finish at Nike Cross Nationals. Coach Frankie Ruiz '96 was named the Joe Newton Coach of the Year!

Congratulations, Wolverines!

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
