New website & Portal launches

The last time the Belen Jesuit website was redesigned was over seven years ago.  This summer, the team - led by Carol Ann Vila, Director of Technology - completely overhauled the website.  According to Vila, it was time for the website to receive a “face lift."
The new website looks completely different and has new and improved functionality for our constituents.

There are two main components to the website: the public side and behind the login.  If you are a prospective student interested in applying, the public side of the website will give you an insider look at what Belen offers.  Visually, it is a huge upgrade.  With more photographs and videos added, it gives the people who visit the website a peak at the experience they will get at the school. “It’s going to give the outside community a good idea of what we are about, the essence of Belen and what we provide to our students,” said Vila.

Unlike the old website, this new one is easier to update and has an added new feature highlighting current news stories and articles.  The news stories will constantly be updated along with photographs and videos, by our Director of Communications, Teresa Martinez.  Articles will feature videos produced by students in the WBLN class and articles written by students in Vincam and Creative Writing.
The public side of the website, as Vila would say, got a much needed “face lift” but what’s behind the login is something that will improve the school life of every student.  The new Learning Management System, OnCampus, only requires the student to log in once and from there they have access to their class schedule, grades, sports schedule, news, and they have the option to communicate with any and all teachers, advisors, and counselors.

The students aren’t the only ones who are benefitting from the change; parents, faculty, and alumni will all get to experience new features.  Parents will be able to access their son’s school day: schedule, practices, games, activities, grades, and even pay tuition, all under one login.  The new system unites everything into one portal with a single sign on.  “The focus in this website is to give a better experience to the people we serve, namely our parents, students and alumni,” said Vila.

For the faculty it is a little different.  They have access to a bulletin board and topics pages where they can create content and post information about their courses as well as update their gradebook.  A resource board has been included with features like the Faculty Handbook, payroll and benefits information and a link to submit jobs to the Copy Center.  For the alumni, they will be able to network with one another and stay up-to-date with the latest alumni association news.  The alumni professional groups will each have a bulletin board in order to facilitate the communication of information.  The behind the login features not only makes things easier for our students and parents, but also for our faculty and alumni.

The OnCampus Learning Management System will not only improve the student and faculty life here at Belen, but it will also help the parents stay updated about their son and his experience.  The complete redesign makes the website faster, easier to navigate and more user-friendly; it is all about communication!

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
