World Youth Day 2019

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
"I am happy to announce that the next World Youth Day will take place in 2019 in Panama," said Pope Francis on July 31 at the closing Mass for the July 26-31 WYD event in Krakow.
Belen Jesuit’s Campus Ministry Office will lead a pilgrimage to Panama in 2019 – joining millions of youth from around the world.  In order to begin to prepare for the pilgrimage there will be an informational meeting for any current 9th and 10th grade students interested in attending World Youth Day. The meeting will take place in the library at 7 p.m. on April 5.

“The planning for this pilgrimage has already begun,” said Mr. Roberto Artiz, Director of Campus Ministry. “We will be joining with the Archdiocese of Miami’s Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry group because of their experience having recently led a pilgrimage to Karkow, Poland in July 2016 for WYD.”

The enormity of WYD makes the logistics for the trip complicated. Working with the archdiocese and an official WYD travel agency will ensure that our students are able to get the best experience possible; including a mass in the rainforest led by Archbishop Wenski.

“The easy story is how exciting it is for the kids. The real story is they’re representing their parish and school to the world and then bringing back to their parish the gifts from World Youth Day,” said Stephen Colella, director of the Secretariat of Parish Life in the archdiocese, which oversees the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
