Update: Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

Francisco J. Vazquez | Community Service and Outreach Coordinator
Thank you to everyone who donated money for our Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Together, over $17,500 was raised.
Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School in Houston was greatly affected by the Hurricane and aftermath. As a result, all money raised has been donated to the school.

“Many of our families have been displaced due to the flooding of their homes. Those families will need support in many forms: shelter, food, clothing, social-emotional support, and of course, financial support to stabilize their lives,” as per a statement on the Cristo Rey school website. “In addition, as Houstonians deal with the impact of Hurricane Harvey on our economy, Cristo Rey Jesuit will face new challenges associated with funding scholarships, school programs, and our work-study program. We appreciate your generous support as we strive to move forward with our mission.”

Cristo Rey Jesuit belongs to the national Cristo Rey Network of schools. The Network is comprised of 30 high schools that provide a quality, Catholic, college preparatory education to 8,000 urban young people who live in communities with limited educational options. All students at Cristo Rey Network schools participate in a work-study program in which they finance the majority of the cost of their education, gain real world job experience, grow in self-confidence, and realize the relevance of their education

As we turn our attention towards Hurricane Irma, we remind our families to prepare for the storm and stay safe. Belen Jesuit will abide by the Miami-Dade County Public School System and close on Thursday, September 7 and Friday, September 8 due to Hurricane Irma. Our school reopening after a hurricane or tropical storm will be independent from Miami-Dade Public Schools. Information will be updated accordingly. Please check our website, www.belenjesuit.org and our social media pages for up-to-date information.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
