Exchange Students Arriving

Jose E. Roca '84 | Principal
On Monday, February 5th, six students from St. Ignatius High School in Taipei, Taiwan will arrive in Miami as part of the fourth annual exchange program between Belen Jesuit Preparatory School and St. Ignatius High School.
Belen Jesuit and St. Ignatius share many historical commonalities.  St. Ignatius High School was founded by the Jesuits in 1850, while Belen was founded in 1854.  Furthermore, St. Ignatius High relocated to Taipei in 1963 after the communist takeover in China, while Belen Jesuit Fathers were expelled from Cuba, also due to a communist dictatorship, and reestablished Belen School in Miami in 1961.

During their fourteen-day stay, students from St. Ignatius will attend classes at Belen, shadowing Junior and Senior Belen students.  They will be hosted by six volunteer families from the Belen community and will participate in various activities, including attending a Miami Heat basketball game, visiting the Perez Art Museum, the Frost Museum of Science and the Miccosukee Village, taking an airboat ride through the Everglades, and traveling to Islands of Adventure.  Additionally, the exchange students will have the opportunity to shadow some of our alumni at their places of employment for one day.

We are excited to welcome our young guests and celebrate Belen Jesuit’s commitment to offer our students the best global education and experiences.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
