Speech and Debate Team Win

The Speech and Debate team competed at the Art Deco Regional Speech and Debate Tournament on February 3.
The tournament was a qualifier for students to participate in the State tournament and to name regional champions in 12 different speech and debate events.  Nine Wolverines qualified to move on to the State Tournament.
 
Leading the team and winner of the Regional Championship in Oral Interpretation of Literature was sophomore Alexander Blanco, who also double qualified in Duo Interpretation of Literature with junior Michael Mesa. Also winning his event and being named Regional Champion was sophomore Dominic Chiappone in Domestic Extemp Speaking.
 
Regional Runner up in Congressional Debate was junior Dominic Abreu. Qualifying to states in Extemp Speaking were sophomores Christopher Alvarez and Kevin Valido and junior Andre Hall.
Kevin Bjorkman and Carlos Caballero qualified to go to states in Public Forum debate.
 
Next, the team will attend the Florida Forensic League State Tournament in March at Timber Creek High School. Best of luck to the team!

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
