Close Up Programs

Close Up is a nonprofit, nonpartisan civic education organization created to inform, inspire, and empower participants to exercise the rights and accept the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. Close Up was created by Stephen A. Janger in 1971 to bring high school students and teachers from across the country to experience American democracy close up in the nation’s capital. Belen Jesuit first participated in the week-long Close Up program in 1975 with then Social Studies Department Chairman Patrick Collins as the first moderator. The opportunity to attend the Close Up program is available to qualified students in their junior or senior year at Belen. For additional information, view the online Close Up brochure and video

Close Up’s Middle School Programs are designed to give students hands-on opportunities to interact with government and history in Washington, DC. Close Up is more than just a tour. It is a fast-paced, fun-filled, and educational experience in one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Belen Jesuit first participated in this program in the fall of 2016.

Overseas Study Program to Europe

The Overseas Study Program (OSP) in the Social Studies Department was created in 1994 by Mr. Charles Cleveland to broaden the cultural, political, spiritual, and personal perspective of students by traveling to distant lands in the summer. Through exploration, experience and reflection, participants encounter insights into God’s good Earth and people that are instrumental in the formation of Christian men.

Through the Jesuit paradigm of experience, reflection and action, the participants of OSP encounter insights into God’s good Earth and people from around the globe that are instrumental in the formation of Christians. Developing a sense of the world community is an established mission of the Society of Jesus. That goal is enhanced with each OSP trip.

Overseas Study Program to Asia

The Belen overseas Study program to Asia was started in 2013 in order to increase Asian Awareness in the Belen community. Mr. Cleveland was asked to create this program after having founded and moderated the Overseas Study Program in the Social Studies Department for over 18 years.

The Belen OSP to Asia works in conjunction with the Matteo Ricci China Club, the Belen Foreign Exchange Program with our brother Jesuit school in Taipei, Taiwan, St. Ignatius High School, and the Chinese Language and Culture classes or Chinese 1,2 ,3 currently being offered in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade as electives.

The Belen Overseas Study Program to Asia focuses on Asian cultures because they have an entirely different perspective from western civilization and is therefore in need of understanding. Mandarin speakers alone constitute over 1.8 billion people. This represents a population that is 6 times the size of the United States.

Through the use of travel, the participants are able to journey to countries such as China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, and other Asian or Eurasian countries under the safety of the educational tour company, EF tours. Although many would admit that countries such as Japan or China are places on their “bucket list”, they would also admit that the likelihood of traveling without a well-organized tour was small. The OSP to Asia thereby fulfills this opportunity.

Remembering the work of Jesuits such as Matteo Ricci: missionary to China, Francis Xavier; missionary to Japan, and Fr. General Pedro Arrupe; missionary to Japan, help to acquaint students with the Jesuit directive of global education and the desire of Pope Francis to increase the number of Asian seminarians. Through the use of experience, reflection, and action, prayerfully, this goal will be achieved.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
