Fall at the Ignatian Center for the Arts

Luis Dulzaides | Director of the Ignatian Center for the Arts
The Ignatian Center for the Arts is proud to host several events during the fall season. The Belen community is invited to watch our gifted thespians during their annual production, listen to our talented student musicians during their various concerts, and witness the artwork of our exceptional student artists.
This year the Center inaugurated the Ignatian Walls.  Inspired by the artwork and designs found on the famous "Wynwood Walls," our students began to design and draw on the blank walls of the Ignatian Center. Answering the call to proclaim the name of Jesus, students in the Studio Art 1 & 2 classes, have taken Father Willie’s challenge to heart and have designed murals entitled, “Visual Prayer.” Mr. Ignacio Font has led the student driven effort and helped choose the four designs that will be featured. Since mid-September our middle school students have been implementing those designs.  The Belen community is invited to come by the Ignatian Center to reflect on how we can better proclaim the name of Jesus, as well as marvel at the talents of our students.

The fall season for the Ignatian Center officially begins on October 14 with the Belen Jesuit Band Costume Concert and Bash.  Under the direction of Band Director Ms. Marlene Urbay, the concert will feature music by the school bands. The students will be allowed to wear costumes. What better way to begin the fall season than with a party in the Ignatian Courtyard? Tickets are available in the Ignatian Center box office.

In November two productions will be featured in the Roca Theater. Opening on November 3rd, the Thespian Troupe will perform the classic play "The Outsiders".  The show brings to life the classic tale of teenage angst and adolescent love in a great coming of age story.  The cast and crew have been hard at work since the beginning of the school year and are excited to show off their talents.

Later in the month, the Ignatian Center will present a one woman show about the life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux.  Therese: the Story of a Soul is a joint collaboration between the Ignatian Center for the Arts and St. Luke's Productions.  The hope is to show through this outstanding production the vibrant life of one of the most heralded saints of our lifetime.

The fall season will come to a close on December 13 with the annual Christmas Concert.  All of the students in the Belen Jesuit Band program are hard at work to celebrate the advent season with a festive and exciting concert for all ages.

Tickets for both plays are available online at http://seatyourself.biz/belenjesuit. Looking forward to seeing our Belen families at these events.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
