The Class of 2017 gathered to celebrate mass for the last time as Belen Jesuit students on May 31, 2017 at Gesu Church for the Alumni Mass and Pin Ceremony.

Father Willie García-Tuñón, S.J. '87 was the main celebrant and Father Pedro Cartaya, S.J. ‘54, the Alumni Association Chaplain, was the homilist.

Alumni representing each decade since the 1940s pinned the over 170 members of the senior class with the alumni pin. The tradition of the alumni pin ceremony has been taking place for over 30 years, the mass was added as part of the ceremony in 2006.

Among the highlights of the ceremony was Class President Alejandro Smith presenting Fr. Cartaya with his Belen diploma. Since Father Cartaya was unable to attend his graduation and had never received it, the Class of 2017 felt that this moment was long overdue.

“I welcome you to this brotherhood,” said Antonio C. Castro '86, Alumni Association President. “The pin is a symbol of the love we share for Belen and I hope you wear it with pride. Believe it or not, your best Belen years are ahead of you. ”

Mr. Castro also announced the Alumni Delegates for the Class of 2017 to be Danny de la Fe and Oscar Berlanga.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
