22 Employees Celebrate Milestone Anniversaries

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
Each year the school community celebrates the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker and recognizes employees celebrating milestone anniversaries. St. Joseph has two feast days on the liturgical calendar. The first is March 19—Joseph, the Husband of Mary. The second is May 1—Joseph, the Worker.

“Today we celebrate this feast, which was created not too long ago in the 1950s by Pope Pius XII,” said Jesuit Father Guillermo Garcia-Tuñon ‘87 in his homily. “He wanted to create a feast in which the Catholic church would celebrate the beauty of the human laborer around the world. Today, we are celebrating the work of over 20 members of our faculty and staff. We are celebrating the fact that for many years they have worked tirelessly, like artists, in order to create beautiful works of arts. They see the potential in every single one of you and understand what you are capable of and how extraordinary your work can be in the future. It is your responsibility, today and every day,  to thank the men and women who are sitting here and are working hard to turn you into extraordinary men. Today, we offer a prayer for each and every one of them so that they continue to use their talents and gifts to educate young men who will always be at the service of God and our church. Amen.”

“Today I felt very honored to be recognized among so many great people,” said Raquel Garcia, Theology teacher. “ I felt very blessed to be able to share this milestone with my family. I know that all the hard work and dedication is worth it,  especially when I looked around and saw all the great young men that surrounded me today. Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
