To My Boys: August 28, 2020

Fr. Willie ‘87
Good morning!

Well, we’re back. Maybe not the way we wanted, but we are back nonetheless. Let’s remember, we can’t have everything we want, at least not immediately. I have to thank my parents for that lesson. They did a great job of keeping their kids in check and managing expectations.

As I sit here and think of the year that begins, I can’t help but briefly reflect on the past. We accomplished a lot last year. Senior caravan, eighth-grade caravan, goodies, and lawn signs delivered to every senior, baccalaureate mass, and graduation. All in all, considering the circumstances, we were able to get much accomplished.

Now, we look forward. It’s a brand new year and there are new challenges, a new task at hand. We’ve done it before and did it well so there is no reason to think we won’t do it again. Remember, we are on the backside of this hill. We are moving towards getting back on campus, walking the hallways, eating in the dining hall, roaming the quad, and making human contact.

That’s actually the most important part... human contact. Having the faculty back on campus has been a blessing. I’ve missed Mr. Vazquez’s bow ties, Coach Albert’s New York accent, and Dr. D’s guitar. I haven’t missed, Fr. Cartaya’s jokes because I live with him and I hear them all the time, but I did miss seeing him tell his jokes to others and watching them pretend to laugh.

No, it’s you guys. The life of the party really. The reason we are here. Our focus is to get you back, making sure every base is covered and every measure is taken to do it as safely as possible. It has been way too long, but we are almost there.

Just remember, you staying safe is key to the big return. The rules still apply. Social distancing, masks, washing of hands, hunkering down as much as possible, and keeping exposure to a minimum are all ways we can work towards bringing you back. And prayer of course. Never forget prayer. Jesus says it can move mountains. Move them, He shall. You can bet on it.

Auspice Maria,
Fr. Willie ‘87

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
