To the Band of Brothers: January 25, 2021

Fr. Willie ‘87
Good morning!

I hope you guys had a great weekend. There is no doubt we had a challenging week filled with highs and lows, our emotions pulled from one extreme to another. On the one hand, the euphoria of finishing the week on Friday with our varsity soccer team beating Columbus in a well-fought fight. Congratulations to our Wolverines. And on the other, continuing our prayers for our brother Anthony Parodi ’23 and his family at all our Masses, rosaries, and prayers. These are the emotions that are commonplace for a family that loves and cares for each other.

As we end the month of January we mark the importance of the Right for Life movement. The end of this coming week would have been the annual March For Life in Washington, D.C. For over 40 years, Belen students have been participating in this very important manifestation of respect for human life. I remember as a student back in the late 80s attending on many occasions with my brother Manny ’88 and our classmates. It was awesome to be present with millions of people of all faiths, from all over the country, united for a common cause. Nothing is more important than to stand firm in defense of human life from the womb to the tomb.

As you can imagine, this year we will not be attending. Of course, our stance as a Catholic school continues to be the same. Since we cannot go to the march, there are a couple of other things we can do. For this reason, I would like to extend to you an invitation to a Holy Hour for life that will be held tonight at the Church of the Little Flower (2711 Indian Mound Trail) at 8:00 p.m. Fr. Manny Alvarez, pastor of Little Flower and a member of our Board of Advisors, has asked me to preside over the Holy Hour. If any of you would like to attend, I encourage you to do so.

Let’s remember to stay focused and work hard this week. The second semester is the opportunity to really put your nose to the grindstone and get your work done. This is no time to slack off. Remember, like with everything else, it’s not so much about how you begin, but how strong you finish. Keep up the great work.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
