Fiesta de la Hispanidad Success

Susan López, Ph.D. | World Languages Department Chairperson
On October 15, the World Languages Department hosted the annual Fiesta de la Hispanidad for the school community. This event highlights the richness of the Hispanic culture. Living in a city as culturally diverse as Miami, and being members of a school that was founded in Cuba, we must embrace what unites us as members of the Hispanic community. Hundreds of people attended and celebrated our diversity in the Garrido Family Plaza.

The celebration of this event is part of the history of our school. Since its foundation, Belen has always been proud to promote the contributions of Hispanics to the community. At Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, we encourage our students to deepen their appreciation for those men and women from Spanish-speaking countries who have made valuable contributions to society in many areas such as science, arts, business, education, and literature among others.

The Fiesta de la Hispanidad is the perfect occasion for our students to learn more about the traditions of their cultural heritage. Our teachers and students work very hard in preparation for the celebration. Our students are active participants in events and prepare booths showcasing the most important facts of each Spanish-speaking country, along with traditional food. This event wouldn’t be complete without the festive touch of the piñatas, banners, and other special projects made by the students enrolled in the Spanish classes. The Fiesta de la Hispanidad gives the members of the school an opportunity to come together in honor of our Hispanic heritage.

Thank you to everyone who was able to celebrate the richness and diversity of our cultural heritage in the Fiesta de la Hispanidad. The enthusiasm and lively spirit we witnessed on October 15 is proof of the joy we experience when we create bonds that unite our community.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the school's property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow. Today, Belen Jesuit is situated on a 34-acre site in western Dade County, just minutes away from downtown Miami.
