To the Band of Brothers: February 10, 2022

Fr. Willie ‘87
You may be wondering where I have been the last few days since I’m not standing out front in the morning. Can it be that Tombola was just too much fun and I decided to join the carnival ride company on a whirlwind tour of North America? Or, maybe the thousands of people who descended on our campus were so overwhelming that I decided to take a week off and just play golf?

Neither. I’m actually in Ohio freezing my tail. Mr. DQ ‘94, our Admissions Director, and I are visiting colleges and alumni. We first stopped at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio to meet with their religious studies department. We wanted to see about recruiting candidates for teaching and campus ministry.

As we speak, we are driving to Cleveland to check out St. Ignatius Preparatory High School and then heading to South Bend, Indiana. There’s only one thing there: Notre Dame. There, we will be meeting with a representative from their ACE Program. Their role is to place graduate students for teaching at Catholic high schools across the country. Since we are already there, we will also be meeting up with our Belen alumni and having lunch with them.

Then, it’s off to Chicago. Why? Why not? Dinner with the alumni, a slice of deep-dish pizza, and more of us freezing our tails are on deck. We are very excited to have about 30 alumni meeting us for dinner.

If all goes well, we will be back in warmer and rainy Miami on Friday. Nothing like the 3-0-5! For now, keep us in your prayers and we’ll see you next week.

Auspice Maria.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
