Alumnus of the Year

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
Congratulations to José M. González '91 who has been named Alumnus of the Year!

“Fr. Dorta-Duque, S.J. '40 began this tradition a number of years ago and we are very excited to revive it,” said Father Willie ‘87 during the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on April 9, 2022. “José is a great example of what it means to be a man for others”

This award is given to the alumnus who best demonstrates dedicated service to Belen Jesuit, lives a life of moral virtue, and is a leader spiritually, ethically, and financially for the betterment of his alma mater and community.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to receive this amazing recognition from my Alma Mater,” said José. “I am extremely grateful for what Belen has done for me in my life and I am happy that I have been able to give back to this great institution.”

José is committed to helping others with the success with which he's been blessed. He gives back to Belen Jesuit so that those who need it have the ability to attend the school regardless of their circumstances. When both of his sons began attending Belen, his bond with the school became stronger, and he became more involved. Now, he sits on the Belen Board of Advisors. González has contributed by applying his knowledge in the field of real estate to help Belen complete its master plan. He was pivotal in the various approvals needed for the plan, from the stadium lights to the chapel.

Beyond his support of Belen, González has become very involved in helping the homeless community in Miami. He began volunteering at the Chapman Partnership years ago with his family, serving meals to the homeless. Now, in addition to sitting on their board, he continues to contribute philanthropically to the organization.

In honor of this recognition, a digital billboard is on display showcasing José on the 836 eastbound near 12th Avenue (around Loan Depot Park) from April 11 to May 1, 2022.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
