Spirit of Giving

Teresa Martinez | Director of Communications
In mid-October, the student body was asked to “B A Giver” and contribute to the annual Thanksgiving Drive. The call to help others didn’t end there. Knowing that our neighbors to the north were devastated by Hurricane Michael and hearing of the destruction of a parish in Panama City we once again were challenged to “answer the call”.

“We teach our students to be men for others and to live the magis,” said Principal Jose E. Roca. “There is no greater example than to serve those in need.”

In all, 226 family bundles were created with the food that was donated. Seventy-five families from Gesu Catholic Church in downtown Miami, 100 families from Centro Mater in Miami and 51 families from St. Dominic Catholic Church in Miami were served.

Boxes of food for approximately 200 more families sent for distribution to:
St. Michael Catholic Church in Miami
Notre Dame d’ Haiti Catholic Church in Miami
And the Marianitas Sisters program in Opa-Locka

The generosity of our families extended to the parish of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Panama City, who in five days raised over $1,300 to help them with their hurricane recovery.

“As the Advent season approaches, let us seek to become more aware and alert to Christ entering our lives, in order to serve those who are suffering and in need with love and courage, and recognize the dignity and light of God in others,” said Teresita Gonzalez, Community Service & Outreach Coordinator.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba by Queen Isabel II of Spain.  The task of educating students was assigned to the priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), whose teaching tradition is synonymous with academic excellence and spiritual discipline.  In 1961, the new political regime of Cuba confiscated the School property and expelled the Jesuit faculty.  The School was re-established in Miami the same year, and over the next decade, continued to grow.  Today, Belen Jesuit sits on a 30-acre site in western Dade County, only minutes away from downtown Miami.
