  • Cost: $375.00
  • Capacity: 25 for each session
  • Description: This one-week course will empower students academically, thus increasing their confidence and, most importantly, their motivation and ability to study and read effectively! It is designed to help students develop study strategies that will help them master their reading in every subject. Reading comprehension is a critical study skill, and students will be introduced to reading strategies that focus on the understanding of written text. These strategies are conscious plans — sets of steps that good readers use to make sense of text, allowing them to focus and improve their attention span while reading and studying. These types of study strategies help students become purposeful, effective, and active readers who are in control. In this course, students will learn a range of effective techniques that will enable them to understand and improve the retention of what they study and read in all subject areas. These include: inferring meaning from context; efficiently summarizing and identifying key points; developing effective questioning strategies and methods; using graphic or semantic organizers; and monitoring their own comprehension and then identifying and resolving difficulties for themselves. By improving their reading skills and study strategies, middle school students can be positioned to hit the ground running on their first day of school. This 15-hour curriculum was developed and is taught by an experienced middle school English teacher.
