Belen Jesuit is pleased to welcome Dr. Adriana Herrera as the new Director of the Olga and Carlos Saladrigas Gallery. In this role, she will lead the gallery’s exhibitions and programming, helping to grow the arts at Belen in keeping with the principles of Jesuit education.
“I would like to strengthen the curatorial program of the Saladrigas Gallery, developing exhibitions that not only achieve greater visibility within the community but also deepen students’ sensitivity and expand their ability to engage with reality through creative thinking, said Dr. Herrera. “Art helps us understand that creation is not a finished process, but one that remains in our hands, continually shaped and renewed by our active imagination.”
Dr. Herrera brings more than 15 years of curatorial experience, having curated or co-curated over 50 local, national, and international exhibitions. As co-founder and curator of the Aluna Art Foundation in Little Havana, she has developed exhibitions that explore the role of imagination in finding creative ways to navigate the present, while fostering a deeper understanding of the significant contributions of Latin American art to art history. Her curatorial work has been presented at the Lowe Art Museum, the Frost Art Museum, the Coral Gables Museum, and the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, as well as at institutions abroad. At Belen, she co-curated The Light of the World, a Christ-centered exhibition bringing five centuries of sacred art to the school community.
A respected art critic, Dr. Herrera has written for El Nuevo Herald, Arte al Día, and Art Nexus, and has authored numerous books and essays on contemporary art. She holds a Ph.D. from Florida International University, where her interdisciplinary research focused on the relationship between art history and literature. She has also taught at FIU and universities in Colombia.
Fluent in English and Spanish, Dr. Herrera shares Belen’s belief that the arts help students deepen their understanding of their spiritual commitment as co-creators of the world we inhabit, recognize the presence of God in the beauty of His creation, and grow into men of conscience, commitment, and compassion. We look forward to the inspiring exhibitions she will bring to the Belen community.
